A Day Late and a Dallas Short

For the first time in nearly two months, I failed to post on a Sunday/Monday last week. This is indicative of how crazy the year is getting as October rolls in. This time last year, I high-tailed it to Houston for a Shakira concert and then visited my birth city, San Antonio over our Fall Break. Given that I’ve blocked out the majority of last Fall, I think that trip was much needed! This time around, with Teacher Workdays replacing our days off, I had to tone my trip down a bit… so I went to Dallas.

Honestly, this is the hardest post to write thus far. Previously, I’ve felt inspired and optimistic, frustrated and angry, anxious and grateful. Currently, I’m just tired and contemplative.  Dallas is an amazing contradictory city; full of opportunity and wealth, growth and energy (oil and night life). Needless to say, it lies in stark contrast with the Delta. You’d think I’d have plenty of time to digest my experiences there given my six-and-a-half hour drive back home, but between a visit from the state department, homecoming festivities, lesson plans, district tests, professional development workshops, middle school sports, and planning, it’s been a long week!

This week, I’ve been reminded of how many awesome people I’ve had the pleasure to know and to work with in my 23 years. I truly feel blessed.  I’ve also been reminded of the many challenges my students encounter regularly, and of the important role I play in helping them overcome these challenges…

I’ll try to write again tomorrow since this post has been in draft form for over a week. In the meantime, here’s a summary of a dream I had around this time last year in honor of today’s iPad giveway- Oprah style:

I had a dream last night about Oprah. In my dream, Oprah came to me and told me to tweet about John Legend’s cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” I said, “but Ms. Winfrey, that song is old, and his cover isn’t very good.”  She replied: “Boy, I’m Oprah! You will do as I say!” I tried to drop the “H-Bomb” (“Well, ma’am, I went to Harvard”) but she deflected it with a million dollar bill.  She then drove off in a new car…

Oprah FTW. TonyB FML
